I was wondering, for years I remember that the music and movie studies claimed that you were not buying the CD or VHS, what you really were buying was the right to listen or watch the content.

If this is true, shouldn't we all get a discount when the same material is reissued in a new media format? Or even if we want to buy a replacement copy, because the dog ate it, or whatever reason....

Where would a lawsuit against the studios using the above theory end up?
