The Free Software Foundation (FSF) and the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) today released a document specifying the process and guidelines for revising the Foundation's GNU General Public License (GNU GPL). The FSF will release the first discussion draft of the new license for comment at the International Public Conference for GPLv3 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on January 16 and 17, 2006.

Parties who question changes should recognize when writing their comments that these freedoms [to run, study, copy, modify and redistribute software] remain the cornerstone of the license. We will evaluate all proposed changes with reference to them.

Ylioppilaslehti writing about Creative Commons

YLIOPPILASLEHTI wrote recently a very positive article about Creative Commons and Science commons.
"Creative Commons ei ole vielä riittävän tunnettu, kommentoi opetusneuvos Ella Kiesi." I recently got a comment that the US webpage gives a anti copyright signals. I guess this is because of the lack of knowlege. It is a good thing that people are writing about it. Somehow the critical mass is still missing in Finland. We have early adopters like Petteri Järvinen, Tekes, Helsingin yliopisto and few artists... and of course Star Wreck but the biggest services don't have CC on their map yet.

Star wreck number one Finnish movie EVER

I am calling it official. Star wreck has passed 3.5 million mark. Previous king of Finnish movie industry was "Tuntematon sotilas" (unknown soldier) produced 50 year ago. It had 2.8 million people going to box office. What is the beautiful part of Star Wreck... It took only 52 days to hit the 3 million mark.

Those of you who don't know, Star Wreck is a full feature fanfiction parody produced with allmost zero budget. The movie is distributed with CC license and it is available for free ($) download or you can buy it on DVD that comes with surround sound, better image quality, extras and nice packaging. The sound track is also amazing (check out the composers stuff) The DVD was released 2 weeks before the Internet release and the sales of the DVD went UP after the Internet release. The fanfilm has its own fans, fan art (see their forum) the subtitles have been translated to several languages you name it. The community is huge.

Star Wreck is the biggest legal movie download in the History of the Internet. It has been available also on several mirror sites, and of course as a popular bit torrent download at several sites like at pirate bay.

Another reason why Star wreck isn't infringing!

Yup, I know this is old news. I remember when this case was in court because my friend had the 2 live crew CD and I had the Roy Orbison CD. Love the linked site that has all the material (songs and video) for controversial copyright cases: 2 Live Crew.

In a unanimous opinion delivered by Justice David H. Souter, the Court held that a parody's commercial character is only one element to be weighed in a fair use enquiry and that insufficient consideration was given to the nature of parody in weighing the degree of copying.

Today I just realized that this case solves my problem. I have been thinking whether the US fair use applies for the commercial use also. Well... US supreme court said YES!
This has bothered me for some time now. While writing an article about fan fiction I just cracked it and man did it feal good. The best part was that I knew the case. How cool is it; using 2 Live Crew to protect Star wreck...

North Korea is into Creative Commons

I was reading the web pages of Korean Friendship Association. KFA organizes trips to the DPR of Korea (North Korea) every year. This year they are having business men there do discuss about import export stuff. I am not sure what to think about the pages. Their FAQ promises signed photographs of Leader Kim Jong IL soon. Star wreck is on fire

Star wreck parody was released less than two weeks ago. In those two weeks Magentasites hosting service site estimates that it has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times. 

The most popular Finnish film "unknown soldier" had 2.8 million people going to the box office.

Does it take a full month to chrush that record?
